BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Many people are trying to secure last-minute tickets to the sold-out LSU vs. Southern game, causing scammers to reach out.
“They can say whatever they need to get your attention, and people will actually fall for it because they really want to be at that game,” said Baton Rouge Better Business Bureau CEO Carmen Million.
Last year, the BBB received over 140 reports about ticket scams for sports events and concerts alone.
Million suggests purchasing tickets with a credit card instead of a debit card.
“That way if it’s not a legitimate ticket, you can dispute the purchase,” said Million. “If you’re contacted out of the blue, that’s another warning sign.”
Million adds if you’re on a website, there are two simple ways to see if it’s a true protected site.
“There should be a lock and key bottom of the site, you should click on it to make sure that it’s activated. Then also in their address should be HTTPS, ‘S’ stands for security,” said Million.
When looking at a website, Million suggests only purchasing tickets from a ticket reseller that provides clear details about the terms of the transaction.
When you search the web for online tickets, advertisements for cheap tickets will often appear. Use good judgment, some of these ads are going to be ticket scams.
LSU Athletics Communications Director Cody Worsham suggests going to LSU will-call or their main ticket website. LSU is now urging people to purchase tickets through its secondary ticket provider, StubHub.
Worsham said if you do go through a secondary site, download a digital ticket for this upcoming game day to avoid conflict.
“When you get to the stadium on game day, the connectivity can be a little inconsistent when you have 200,000 people on campus,” said Worsham.
Purchasing through StubHub is one way to make sure people are not turned away at the game. If you do not have a valid ticket, you will not be allowed to enter.
“And that’s unfortunate and we never want that to happen, there’s obviously people out there wanting to take an advantage over people all the time,” said Worsham.
If you’re unsure if you’re ticket is real, present your ticket to will call and they can verify if your ticket is legitimate and show you how to tell if a ticket is fake.
