CATS & BRPD to announce public safety initiative

Local News

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – The Baton Rouge Police Department is continuing efforts to keep citizens safe including those riding the bus.

A press conference will be held with the police department, Mayor’s Office and Capital Area Transit System (CATS) to introduce what they are calling a proactive public safety initiative using BRPD’s telephone reporting unit and QR code placards that will be placed inside the buses and at all bus shelters.

The telephone reporting unit was introduced in March 2020 just as the pandemic first hit and is used as a way that police officers can practice social distancing, for those situations that don’t require an officer on scene.

Some issues that are handled from the unit include theft, non-domestic civil matters, and fraud..

The QR code system works by scanning it with another mobile device you can have a live video call with a police officer…

Officials will make that announcement at 10:30 a.m.
