BATON ROUGE, La (BRPROUD) – Children as young as five are now able to get their first dose of the COVID-19 shot, and on Friday at Our Lady of The Lake, the first round of children got their shots.
Eighteen children rolled up their sleeves to get their vaccine, including nine-year-old Jane Walker and her five-year-old sister Livia Walker.
“I’m kinda nervous, but I’m excited to get the shot because it means I get to go to, like, restaurants and fun stuff like Knock Knock,” Jane said.
Their mother, Mari Walker, who works at the hospital, is ready for her entire family to be protected.
“We have been waiting for this moment,” said Mari.
For many families, getting their little ones vaccinated means less stress for the upcoming holidays.
“I haven’t seen my mom since before the pandemic, they live in Oklahoma and it felt too risky to get together,” said Mari.
Mari said getting her children vaccinated not only protects her children but everyone in the community.
“And I’m really excited to do that,” Mari said.
The hospital has received their first shipment of 200 child-sized doses of the Pfizer vaccine — and more are on the way so children like Jane and Livia can start to get back to normal.
“It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be, and I am glad I did it,” Jane said holding her new stuffed animal she was gifted for being brave and receiving her shot.
