Church to hold documentary showing about local girl left paralyzed after suicide attempt

BATON ROUGE, La (BRPROUD) – On Monday, Oct. 11, St. John Evangelist Catholic Church will host a documentary showing about a local girl who survived a suicide attempt.

“My Ascension” is about Emma Benoit, a 16-year-old cheerleader who went to Dutchtown High School, who survived a suicide attempt but it left her paralyzed. The 90-minute documentary will show Benoit’s experiences and her journey to regain the ability to walk. The showing will feature other young people who were lost to suicide along with their friends and families speaking about them.

A speaking event with Benoit, filmmaker Gary Dicharry and Tonja Myles, a mental health advocate, will follow the showing.

The documentary showing will be in the Activity Center at St. John Evangelist Catholic Church from 6 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. The center is located at 15208 Hwy 73 in Prairieville, La.

Masks are required and the event is free. Registration is required to attend the showing. Follow this link to register.
