City of Central awaits road assessment after multiple crashes on Greenwell Springs Road

Local News

CENTRAL, La. (BRPROUD) – People traveling in Central say they’re fed up with dangerous road conditions.

Thursday night a truck overturned into a ditch at Greenwell Springs Road, something the mayor said is all too common.

“Last year we had a fatality. Someone actually burned to death in a car late one night. But, there have been fatalities along this road for decades,” said City of Central Mayor David Barrow.

He said Greenwell Springs Road is dangerous because it’s narrow and runs between two ditches. An increase in traffic has led to an uptick in crashes, Barrow added.

The last safety check performed by the state was ten years ago.

“Some of the very safety improvements that were done are gone,” he said.

According to Barrow, every week at least two crashes require emergency services or road closures.

Todd Denham is a 15-year resident of Central. He said he spends more than half the week on the roadway because of crashes.

“It’s pretty easy living out here, it becomes comfortable. But it becomes really uncomfortable when you can’t get home,” Denham said.

The state is currently conducting an assessment on the road’s safety. Barrow is pleading with the state to finish the latest safety check as soon as possible. In the meantime, he is asking residents to be on high alert.

“We had a four-car rear-end collision because somebody wasn’t paying attention,” he said.
