BATON ROUGE, La (BRPROUD) ––– Starting Monday, the Baton Rouge Police Department is taking part in a national campaign to promote wearing your seatbelt.
The Click it or Ticket campaign begins just in time for memorial day weekend when more people are expected to travel. “We are looking at over 34 million people across the country taking to the roads for vacations,” says Department of Transportation’s Shawn Wilson.
He says that is likely due to the pandemic, “it’s important for folks to realize that it’s going to be a peak travel day, particularly coming off of a time when we were in COVID and we had record lows of travel.”
More cars mean a higher chance of getting into a crash, “last year we had a record high with record loads of travel over 800 plus people were involved in accidents that involved a fatality,” Wilson says.
The campaign reminds drivers that wearing a seatbelt is not only the law, but it can save your life. “This national campaign is over the Memorial Day weekend because of the amount of people that statistically are traveling,” says Don Coppola with BRPD.
Both say you are more likely to survive a crash if you are wearing a seatbelt and although you may be excited to start your vacation, do not risk your safety.
“We want to get that message across, wearing a seatbelt in a vehicle is one of the safest things you can do,” says Coppola.
The Click it or Ticket campaign is set to run through June 6.
