BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office denies claims that the air conditioning inside the prison is not working, while one local coalition says they hear otherwise.
The East Baton Rouge Parish Prison Reform Coalition is making these allegations, but the sheriff’s office said that’s not the case.
“Treat me as a human person,” said Laramie Griffin, a member of the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison Reform Coalition.
Following their monthly visit to the EBR Parish Prison, the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison Reform Coalition said they were horrified when they were met with screams coming from inside the prison.
A video provided to us by the coalition shows an interaction between a prison guard over the alleged conditions: “Two months until the air conditioning gets fixed? Two months? And you feel how hot the sun is? Yeah. Did you guys put in a work order? Yeah.”
President of the coalition Linda Franks said they were shocked to hear detainees screaming in distress about the conditions inside their cell walls.
“Rodents in the cell are actually in the beds with the detainees,” she said. “In the summertime, no air conditioning and some of the detainees, you know, just out of their mouths yelling out of the facility that they are not giving clean water.”
In a response to the allegations, the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office replied, saying there is no validity to any of the claims.
“No one should be forgotten about. Everyone is a human being and should be treated with human decency,” said Griffin.
An EBRSO spokesperson said the claims are nothing new and that they have addressed the coalition’s false allegations on multiple occasions in the past.
