Come see the sky or explore the water with your pet at BREC parks this Saturday

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – BREC facilities are going to be busy this weekend.

On Saturday, May 15, BREC is offering two events for adults, children and pets.

The two events are:

  • Highland Road Park Observatory is hosting 14th Annual International Astronomy Day
  • Outdoor Adventure – Pets & Paddle

The 14th Annual International Astronomy Day is free and scheduled to run from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Attendees can expect to see representatives from these local groups and organizations:

  • Baton Rouge Amateur Radio Club
  • Baton Rouge Gem and Mineral Society
  • Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport
  • Infinity Science Center and BREC Art
  • Meet new furry friends from the Baton Rouge Zoo
  • Learn about swamps from BREC’s Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center

Activities for children will include:

  • NASA’s Train Like an Astronaut station
  • The frantic search game
  • Adventure Quest
  • Scope-on-a-Rope
  • An array of physical science demos
  • Many sky viewing opportunities

BREC says one of those sky viewing opportunities could be the “passing of the International Space Station at 9:10 p.m. and the Chang Zheng 2C Rocket Body at 9:35 p.m.”

Food and drinks will be available in the form of City Gelato and Louisiana Lemonade.

BREC asks that you bring binoculars if you have them.

The second event is all about the outdoors.

Bring your pets to the University Lakes between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m for Pets & Paddle.

According to BREC, “with $10 donation to Friends of the Animals, proud pet owners can kayak or paddle board across the beautiful University Lakes with their furry friends.”

A wash station will be available for anyone who needs to wash their pet.

The location of the wash station is Milford Wampold Memorial Park.
