GONZALES, La. (BRPROUD) — Ascension Parish came together to support a man battling stage four cancer and injuries after a road rage incident left him beaten on the side of the road

In honor of Scott Gray, the community put together a benefit for him. There were motorcycles, vintage vehicles, food and fun.

“It’s just incredible what God has in store for us after something so tragic,” stated Gray.

Gray has been slowly recovering, but Sunday he had a big smile on his face as he spent quality time surrounded by friends and loved one.

“It’s a great place to live. I’ve never been treated like this before. The same community is here again for me today. They did the same thing when I lost my leg. It’s very incredible. You people here are the best,” he expressed.

The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office said the man accused of beating Gray and leaving him unconscious on the side of the road has been behind bars since Friday.

“I hope they can keep him in so he doesn’t hurt anybody else, said Gray.

Friends with the Odins Veterans Club said when they heard about the incident, they knew that had to do something.

“We put this on and we had three days and we thought 200 plates of pastalaya would cover everybody. But then when I posted it on Facebook, the amount of shares and the amount of attention that it got was amazing,” Odins Veterans Club Road Captain Freddie Lakes.

“We wanted to come together to put on a benefit to help him get through this cancer treatment and to help him get through the medical expenses that he’s suffered during this assault,” stated Odins Veterans Club Secretary Daniel Labue.

They sold pastalaya and held a 50/50 raffle to raise money.

“Within 28 minutes, the pastor, I will sort out a 20 gallon pastalaya was gone 28 minutes. I was blown away. I was impressed,” expressed Labue.

Longtime friend and cook Michael Jagneaux said Gray has done so much for the community, so it was their time to give back.

“He’s so giving and loving and everybody’s communicating. All he has relived is a negative of what happened to him. With this, he probably was able to forget all about it every now and then today,” he said.

“It’s very overwhelming when they step up and do this for me because I’m the man that doesn’t want it, but I’m accepting it because it’s a gift from the Lord,” added Gray.
