Hundreds of people came out Saturday to pay respect to Zachary’s ‘double hero,’ Deputy Chief Christopher Lawton.

Lawton died exactly 20 years and one day after joining the Zachary fire department as a volunteer in 1996. He worked his way up the ranks to Chief Deputy and also served as a reserve officer with the Zachary Police Department.

Lawton was hit and killed by a suspect in a U-Haul truck in the line of duty Monday.

Other area agencies took over the duties of the Zachary Police Department Saturday, so Lawton’s friends and co-workers could attend his funeral.

There was a visitation in Zachary Saturday morning before a procession led him to his final resting place in Clinton.
