Convicted murderer asks court to take him off death row decades after sentencing

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Friday was a continuation of a bench trial for death row inmate, Frank Cosey.

Cosey was sentenced to death for the gruesome rape and murder of a 12-year-old Baton Rouge girl in 1990.

Cosey’s representation attempted to remove him from death row, claiming he was mentally incompetent at the time of the crime.

Experts and witnesses took turns testifying, breaking down what is considered mental incompetence in Louisiana, while old friends and co-workers were asked to recall decades-old memories, like if Cosey played golf or if he could read.

This battle had been going on for years and Cosey’s representation implicated that there is no end in sight.
