Covid Vaccine Canvassing: Volunteers walk door-to-door providing vaccination information

Local News

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – Community Canvassers went door-to-door encouraging residents to receive at COVID-19 vaccine at the Bon Carre Community Vaccine Center or at one of the Community Outreach Vaccine Sites.

Monday, volunteers walked through the Scotlandville community, providing information about the vaccines and how to get it.

“It is more effective when you have someone who has the vaccination. They can express how it felt, you know what were their symptoms after the fact and how they went on with the rest of their day,” said Kimberly Thomas.

Their mission was simple, provide information and when possible sign people up for a shot.

“If you go meet people where they are then we’ll get greater results as far as opportunities for those who want to get vaccinated,” said Together Baton Rouge’s Lead Organizer, Khalid Hudson.

The group took to the streets with cards and flyers on hand, pushing residents to visit the new mass vaccination site at Bon Carre.

“We have the FEMA site that launched earlier last week where we’re also scheduling appointments for that. So we’re going door to door using our advanced system to identify communities then we’re scheduling people for their appointments using the LDH website,” said Hudson.

For the people beating the streets, this new approach comes from a personal level.

“Folks have their own personal stories about how COVID has impacted them. They’ve lost family members, they lost parents, they’ve lost uncles and aunts. They’ve lost close friends and others and so this is really personal for a lot of people that take this particular work on,” said Hudson.

Volunteers sid, the response is positive making the walk, one worth taking.

“They’ve been really receptive to it and they know, hey we’re all in this together,” said Thomas.
