BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – A man has been charged in a deadly shooting that killed Eishmel Spears, Jr., 69, around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 7.
Tony Lanus, 21, of Baton Rouge was arrested and accused of second-degree murder and illegal use of weapons or dangerous instrumentalities after an investigation by the Baton Rouge Police Department.
Officers responded to 9988 Merganzer Avenue and found Spears “in the driver’s seat of his Chevrolet Silverado,” according to the affidavit. Spears had been shot and was pronounced dead at the scene.
As the investigation unfolded, BRPD discovered Spears was in his vehicle when he became a target of gunfire. Shell casings were found, and BRPD said in the affidavit that “gunshots were fired in rapid succession.” A witness reportedly identified Lanus as the shooter.
Lanus remains behind bars in the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.
