BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – A man was arrested after a shooting at a Baton Rouge hotel on Saturday, Sept. 24.

The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office said Sheik Blount, 34, was arrested and charged with attempted second-degree murder. He’s accused of shooting a man at La Quinta Inn & Suites. Arrest documents said deputies arrived at the hotel around 1 a.m. and learned that the shooting happened when a male victim reportedly tried to enter Blount’s room.

According to arrest documents, Blount told deputies that he heard someone at his hotel room door. Blount said he questioned the man through the door and told him the person the victim was asking for was not there. He said the victim tried to open the door aggressively before walking away.

Arrest documents said Blount also told deputies the victim began to walk toward him while arguing and had a hand inside his jacket. Blount reportedly said he didn’t see a firearm and he was scared, arrest documents said.

Deputies watched surveillance footage of the shooting and could see Blount was several feet away from the man, who was reportedly unarmed and not an immediate threat to Blount.

Investigators found the gun used during the shooting inside the hotel room. The sheriff’s office said Blount was previously convicted on felony charges and was not supposed to have a handgun.

Blount was arrested and charged with attempted second-degree murder and possession of a firearm or carrying a concealed weapon by a person convicted of certain felonies.
