BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – The Baton Rouge Fire Department is reminding residents that it is time to change the batteries in your smoke detectors.

As the clocks turn back, the department says, that’s the perfect time to get into the practice of replacing the batteries.

On the streets of Baton Rouge, people were asked the simple question, ” How often do you change the battery in their smoke detectors?”

Although it wasn’t a trick question, many people seem to have the same answer.

“When it beeps.”

Baton Rouge resident, Faith Spottsville, said she does it when it starts to beep.

“I took it off the wall so there’s no changing it I didn’t know that’s what it means when it beeps” said Spotsville.

Justin Hill with Baton Rouge Fire said, although the task is small it could have a huge impact, saving your life.

“A working smoke detector in your home increases your odds of surviving a house fire by at least 50 percent” said Hill.

He said, people who use generators and gas appliances should also be aware of corbin monoxide.

“It’s odorless, colorless, you can’t see it, you can’t taste it you don’t know that it’s there, you can’t smell it. So it’s important to have those corbin monoxide detectors installed in your home” said Hill.
