DENHAM SPRINGS, La. (BRPROUD) – Thursday, May 25 was a special day for the son of Cpl. Shawn Kelly. Liam had his pre-K graduation on that day and was accompanied by 15 or so Denham Springs Police Department officers and support staff.

According to DSPD spokesperson Sgt. Scott Sterling, they were there in Kelly’s place to support Liam’s achievement.

When asked what it meant to have members of the police department at the graduation ceremony, Sterling said, “It was very fulfilling for DSPD officers to be able to attend Liam’s graduation and be there when Shawn couldn’t.”

Kelly’s wife Megan call the pre-K graduation a success and thanked DSPD for their attendance.

“That was a wonderful surprise! You all have been so supportive through this difficult time. Thank you to everyone for the continued prayers for Shawn and our family,” she said.

DPSD confirmed that Kelly’s condition remains the same. He was shot on Thursday, May 11 when responding to a disturbance call near a shopping center. A prayer vigil was held days later for Kelly.

A suspect was killed.

Since the shooting, the local community has come together to support Kelly and his family.
