BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A Denham Springs woman is behind bars after allegedly using another person’s Amazon account to buy a portable DVD player and headphones for an inmate.

An arrest warrant says on April 13, 2021, the victim reported to the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office that her Amazon account was accessed and used by an unknown person. The victim said the account’s information was updated to show the name and pictures of a person she did not know, who was later identified as Shelly Clayton, 39, of Denham Springs.

The victim told authorities she found out that an order had been shipped after contacting Amazon. She then reported the purchase to Amazon and canceled the linked credit card.

The sheriff’s office investigated the purchase and found that a portable DVD player and headphones totaling $72.67 were ordered and shipped to the Caldwell Correctional Center in Grayson, according to arrest documents. Further investigation by the sheriff’s office found that the package was for a trustee inmate at the facility. It was discovered that Clayton was an acquaintance of the inmate, according to EBRSO.

The inmate told authorities that his DVD player was broken and Clayton offered to send him a new one but claimed he did not know how it was bought or ordered.

Authorities tried to get in touch with Clayton on June 18th and August 3rd of 2021. Once in contact, Clayton denied knowing anything about the Amazon order before asking if it was a television. Authorities told her it was for a portable DVD player and she acknowledged the purchase.

An affidavit stated that Clayton had agreed to meet with authorities when she returned home from Alexandria, however, she failed to show up at a January meeting and stopped responding to authorities. Clayton was arrested and booked into EBR Parish Prison on charges of theft, access device fraud, and computer fraud on Thursday, May 19.
