BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office says the deputy injured by a gunshot Tuesday is believed to have shot herself while firing at a dog latching onto her.

The deputy was still in the hospital as of Wednesday but was doing okay, according to EBRSO. Officials said she was shot in the leg after being rushed by dogs at a Baton Rouge apartment while on duty.

Three pit bulls were inside the apartment when the deputy and a training officer were making contact with a person in reference to a restraining order. A spokesperson for the sheriff’s office said one of the dogs snapped at the deputy before shots were fired.

One dog was killed, and the two others were detained, EBRSO said.

An investigation is ongoing.
