BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office said a deputy was shot after being rushed by “several dogs” at a Baton Rouge apartment complex.

The sheriff’s office said the deputy and a training officer were making contact in reference to a restraining order when the door opened and both were rushed by dogs. The deputy was shot in the leg during the incident.

An EBRSO spokesperson said one of the two pit bulls was snapping at the deputy. A total of three dogs were in the apartment. Officials said one dog is dead and two of the dogs were detained.

“We know that the deputy as well as one other deputy discharged their firearm at the dog while he was attempting to latch onto her,” said EBRSO spokesperson Casey Hicks.

Hicks said it’s unclear which deputy fired the shot that hit the deputy and an “after-action review” is being conducted.

The deputy has non-life-threatening injuries, according to EBRSO.

An investigation is ongoing.
