BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – Baton Rouge Police are investigating a shooting that killed a family’s dog.
A spokesperson with BRPD said an officer responded to a 911 medical call when the dog allegedly charged at him. BRPD claims the officer attempted to back up, but the dog kept charging, forcing the officer to pull his gun out and fire shots.
“There’s mace, there’s billy clubs, there’s tasers, there’s your boot you have on your foot, just give her a swift kick in the head,” said James Frake.
The family said the incident is hard to believe because their dog was sweet and wouldn’t harm anyone.
Bean was a rescue for wife Amanda who works from home.
“She loved playing, the boys would take her for a walk every day, throwing balls down the hall, she’d run and get it,” said Frake.
The family said they were on vacation while Bean was at a pet sitter’s home when the incident happened last Friday. Frake said the most disturbing part about this was what officers allegedly said after the incident.
“You hear an officer say, um, is that a pit bull? Yes, that’s a pit, we kill pits,” said Frake.
The ring doorbell video quickly shows the officers but does not capture the entire ordeal.
“It was a non-violent call, a medical emergency. You knew they had dogs when you ring the doorbell the first time and your first instinct was to shoot,” said Frake.
The family believes the officer acted on impulse but says it should not have ended with a member of their family killed.
“You made a mistake. It’s clear you made a mistake. Own up to the mistake, apologize and try to get better,” said Frake.
“She was such a blessing to our family and we are so broken up over her loss,” said the dog owner.
BRPD said there is body cam video from the officers, but because this is an ongoing investigation so it won’t be released right now.
The family wants people to know that pit bulls are not bad breeds and at this point, all they want is an apology from the police department.
