BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – One source estimates that 43.4 percent of families in East Baton Rouge Parish consist of single parents who are raising children on their own.
Many single parent families face financial hardships, and according to a 2018 study published in the National Library of Medicine, those interviewed “described food and fuel poverty, and the need to make sacrifices to ensure that children’s basic needs were met. In some cases, participants went without food and struggled to pay bills.”
In view of these struggles, a number of nonprofits and other agencies organize events designed to provide families with food and clothing at no charge.
A local organization that’s helming such an effort is Louisiana Black Advocates for Life.
The agency is hosting a Sunday, October 23 Diapers Wipes & Formula Drive at the Lighthouse Christian Fellowship Church (1564 Nicholson Drive Baton Rouge, LA 70802) from 1:30 p.m. until 3 p.m.
The purpose of the drive is to ensure that local mother’s in need are supplied with donated diapers, wipes, and formula.
Before the October 23rd event, those who’d like to donate can do so Wednesday, October 19 from 8:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. at Lighthouse Christian Fellowship Church.

According to its website, Louisiana Black Advocates for Life aims to unite local members of the Black community to promote cultural awareness and growth in Louisiana.
The organization’s website goes on to say that it focuses on reducing the high rate of abortion among Black women by partnering with churches, schools, and community groups to provide related resources and educational events.
