BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – According to DopeSmack creator Joseph Salcedo, it’s been a long time since New Orleans has had a superhero and DopeSmack is the hero the city’s been waiting for.
For all the action lovers out there, “DopeSmack” follows Alex Santos, a self-taught scientist, based in New Orleans who develops a bulletproof suit and receives superhuman powers that allow him to battle super-villains, fight for his city, avenge his father’s death and rescue the ones he loves.
The idea started off as a film turned comic book available in December. Dopesmack fights drug-dealing super villains, Salcedo says this was inspired by the lack of “Say No to Drugs” campaigns he noticed. He wanted to inspire kids in an action-packed way to rise above what they know is wrong.
The main character, Alex Santos, is also a Mexican-American, something Salcedo says was intentional when creating the superhero for representation.
Salcedo said the superhero was inspired by his interest in dressing up as his favorite superhero as a kid. Now a father, he wanted to give his children a superhero to look up to as well.
“When I was a kid I used to dress up, as a superhero and go outside and climb trees…,” said Salcedo.
Salcedo is still accepting funding for the final stages of this project. If you are interested in supporting or interested in buying merchandise, click here.
