PLAQUEMINE, La. (BRPROUD) – The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development needs to make repairs to a part of LA 1 South.

While the repairs are ongoing, DOTD is closing the left lane “between LA 77 and Meriam Street in Plaquemine until further notice.”

Traffic will still be able to pass in the right lane.

“This closure is needed for repairs to the roadway due to a sinkhole that has formed at the above location,” said DOTD.

So what caused the sinkhole?

Officials said the sinkhole is due to a leaking sewer pipe. DOTD said the plan is for temporary repairs to begin on Tuesday night.

DOTD expects this section of LA 1 to open back up on Wednesday morning. However, closures are expected to take place again on Saturday, Aug. 27 for permanent repairs.
