BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Now that a jury has been selected, the Dyteon Simpson trial began Thursday with the prosecution’s opening statements.
Jurors received a dramatic speech as the prosecution pointed at Simpson, claiming he killed Wayde Sims, an LSU basketball star. The defense followed and as they were picking up steam, prosecutors interrupted with an objection.
The defense told jurors they are not denying that Simpson shot Sims, but they’re arguing that it was justified. Their size difference was mentioned many times — Sims was 60 pounds heavier and towered a foot taller than Simpson. The defense claims Sims was the aggressor.
Witnesses were called to the stand, starting with Fay Sims, Wayde’s mother. Various law officials were called to the stand next and body camera videos were played in the courtroom. One video showed Sims’ lifeless body and what appears to be EMS ripping open his shirt to give him CPR.
Sims’ parents exited the courtroom as the graphic video played.
The remaining family and friends of Sims who stayed to watch the video were visibly upset. The number of family and friends of the Sims family present at court seemingly grows every day.
Simpson faces second-degree murder in the 2018 shooting death of Sims.
