BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — East Baton Rouge Parish school system has canceled classes for Monday, but EBR Superintendent Dr. Sito Narcisse said classes will be back in session Tuesday morning.
According to EBR School Board, All employees are to report to work but school is still canceled for EBR Parish.
“We will have school on Tuesday. But we cannot hold our kids, hostage, for disagreements. We have to be able to move forward,” said Narcisse.
This comes after EBR school workers expressed concerns about their job roles and some refused to clock in on Friday, mainly because of low pay wages. Narcisse said the board has done everything it can.
“The board has done its best to provide stipends and to be able to compensate. Do we have things that we need to do better? Absolutely. Do we need to pay people more? Absolutely,” Narcisse said.
According to Narcisse, the school board plans to update everyone on Monday around 2 p.m.
“I will not call off school on Tuesday. It is important to get our kids back in school because they are the most precious commodity in this school system,” Narcisse said.
Narcisse said he is committed to looking through the school budget, but it will take some time. He said they are proposing a plan to the board on Thursday for those changes.
Monday morning he will meet with several EBR employees to find a better solution to make sure no child is left neglected.
