BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office (EBRSO) has arrested a suspect who is connected to a shooting in the Gardere area that injured three people.

EBRSO deputies were called to the shooting at the Gardere Coin Laundry at 4:11 p.m. Friday where three individuals were found injured. Recovered surveillance footage showed 38-year-old Rontrell Nelson carrying an assault rifle and his girlfriend carrying a tire iron.

The footage showed a female walking out of the building but coming back firing a small handgun. Nelson was seen following the victim with his rifle as she was running away from the business. He allegedly began shooting at her and she fell to the ground. Nelson and his girlfriend fled the scene but were detained by EBRSO after a traffic stop.

Nelson was not injured but his girlfriend was. She was taken to a nearby hospital.

EBRSO spoke to a male victim who was inside when the incident happened. Deputies say the male victim told them he saw Nelson and the girlfriend enter the building with their weapons. The victim allegedly saw the girlfriend hit the female victim on the head with the tire iron after getting into a fight. The victim also told deputies that he was shot when Nelson fired his gun.

EBRSO says that Nelson admitted to carrying the gun and his girlfriend carrying the tire iron inside the business but denied he fired gun shots while he was inside. Nelson “did acknowledge” he discharged the rifle at the female victim as she was running away, EBRSO says.

Nelson told deputies that his girlfriend was “snuck” by the female victim two days before in the Gardere Coin Laundry parking lot. EBRSO says detectives were able to obtain surveillance footage of the incident.

EBRSO says that the girlfriend admitted to getting into a fight with the female victim but denied having a weapon.

Nelson has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder and illegal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He is booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.
