BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office (EBRSO) arrested a 29-year-old man for attempted second-degree murder Friday.

According to EBRSO, detectives responded to a call at a parking lot in the 8500 block of Old Hermitage Parkway about a shooting incident. Deputies checked the area and were unable to find a victim or evidence of a shooting.

According to official arrest documents, after deputies began to clear the area, a male came forward stating he was the victim of the shooting. The victim tells deputies his cousin, Jatarius Crump, 29, shot at him after an altercation at the park.

During an interview with the detectives, the victim states how he and Crump rented a hotel. During the stay, the victim, along with others, walked in on Crump having sex. The victim then told detectives he began making jokes about the matter while at the park. Crump allegedly arrived at the park drunk and became violent. The victim told detectives Crump pulled out a gun and someone else contacted the authorities.

After deputies left the area, Crump began making threats claiming he was going to shoot the victim in the head. Several hours later, the victim said he was being chased by Crump from the park to a local complex in the 1700 block of Gardere Lane. Crump began firing at the victim and the victim described hearing the bullets “zip past his head.” The victim ran from Crump until he saw he was no longer in the area.

The victim told EBRSO deputies Crump was wearing a white shirt with dreadlocks and stated he returned to the store after the shooting. After reviewing surveillance from a business in the area, Crump was seen wearing the described clothing.

EBRSO says moments later, while detectives were recovering footage, the victim told detectives Crump had allegedly returned to the store. Crump fled the scene before being apprehended. Shortly after, detectives saw a male matching Crump’s description return to the store wearing a colorful hoodie, partially covering his hair. Detectives contacted the male who identified himself as Crump.

Crump was arrested and taken to the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on charges of attempted second-degree murder.
