BATON ROUGE, La (BRPROUD) — You’ve likely heard that North Baton Rouge is known as a food desert, but local leaders are hoping to change that by bringing in a new grocery store to the area.

Local leaders would like to hear from you first.

Food deserts are places where people lack access to healthy and affordable food, and as the largest food desert in the parish, it is something the people of Scottlandville know all too well.

District 2 Councilwoman Chauna Banks is hosting a community meeting at the Exxon Mobil YMCA to discuss building a new store in the Shada Plantation development.

One option they are considering is a co-op. So rather than a private or public company, the decisions about the production and distribution of its food are chosen by its members.

The meeting starts at 5:30 pm at the ExxonMobil YMCA, located at 7717 Howell Blvd, Baton Rouge, LA 70807.
