Expert Perspective: What LSU’s Department of Education investigation looks like

Local News

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – LSU is under federal investigation by the U.S. Department of Education for campus safety and experts are giving insight to what the investigation looks like.

The investigation comes after multiple reports of sexual misconduct allegations and a bombshell article from USA Today, alleging the university failed to act.

“They are rare. It’s something that the department of education conducts maybe half a dozen to at most a dozen any given year. The issues are as serious as it gets with respect to both crime reporting and keeping the campus safe” said S. Daniel Carter, President of the Safety Advisors for Educational Campuses, LLC.
According to Carter, the investigation is “a bureaucratic process with safeguards for the privacy of the individuals involved for the institution and they want to get it right. “

He said, although the process to launch the investigation was quick, it could take years to complete.

“The Louisiana State clearly acts to review, we would expect it to last two to three years. That would include the initial investigation and opportunity for the university to respond and a resolution of any potential fines that the department of education may seek to impose” said Carter.

Once the investigation wraps, it could end with LSU facing major fines.

“Giving the scope of the investigation, of Louisiana State University, it is entirely possible that they could be looking at a two to four million dollar fine once this is all said and done” said Carter.
