Experts offer boat safety ahead of Memorial Day Weekend

Local News

If you are planning to enjoy Memorial Day weekend on your boat, experts with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries said authorities will be out there to make sure boaters have the right equipment.

“We’re going to check and see if you have a life jacket,” said Randy Lanoux, with the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.

Anyone younger than 16 must wear a life jacket at all times.

Another safety tips for people who like tubing and jet skiing is to have a ‘spotter’ incase anyone falls into the water and is stranded. A killswitch also always comes in handy if anyone falls. The boat will automatically stop so no one else gets hurt.

Boaters can face serious consequences if they choose to drink and driver their boats.
