BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — At only 17 years old, Alashia Collins was just shy of high school graduation before a tragic accident.

Collins, known as Lay Lay Collins, was killed in a gun violence incident on Friday, April 22nd. Collins was trying to leave a fight before someone allegedly pulled out a gun and shot her. She was taken to the hospital but it was too late.

Family and friends gathered at Greenwood Community Park to honor her life. The park was filled with lavender, pink, white and silver balloons, her favorite colors.

“She was such a sweet child, always was before her time, she was a sweet soul, she was a beautiful person. I just feel like we need to come together as parents if you see your child is doing something, that they are not supposed to be doing speak up,” said Collins’ cousin, Lakisha Chatman.

Collins had aspirations of becoming a police officer to help serve and protect the community
