A woman was killed in a traffic crash early Saturday on North Sherwood Forest Boulevard and the other driver, Bennie Walker III, 41, was arrested on charges of Vehicular Homicide, DWI (2nd Offense) and Reckless Operation, Baton Rouge police said.

The fatal crash occurred around 6:25 a.m. in the 2000 block of North Sherwood Forest Blvd.

Walker was driving a 1999 GMC Sierra and turned north bound on North Sherwood Forest Blvd from a side street into oncoming traffic in the southbound lane. Walker’s vehicle struck a 2016 Chevrolet Impala head on.

The driver of the Impala, Tonisha Shepherd, 40, was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced deceased.

When officers arrived at the scene, Walker, was “extremely intoxicated, with a strong odor of a suspected alcoholic beverage about his person, red blood shot eyes, slurred speech, and poor balance,” according to the police report.

Police said Walker admitted to drinking several beers before driving. He performed poorly on a field sobriety test and failed a blood alcohol content breath test with a 0.125 percent BAC, which is greater than the legal limit to drive of 0.08 percent.

According to police, Walker was previously arrested for DWI on Dec. 1, 2015 and he does not have a driver’s license.
