FEMA urges BR residents to prepare for hurricane season, get flood insurance

Local News

BATON ROUGE, La. (FOX 44) (NBC LOCAL 33) – As our Stormtracker Team tracks the latest low pressure area, FEMA and the National Flood Insurance Program urge residents to start preparing right now for hurricane season.

FEMA said in a news release, one of the most important steps you can take is to get flood insurance. We are told one inch of water can cost more than $25,000 in repairs, and those damages are not covered in most homeowners and renters policies. Flood insurance usually takes around 30 days to go into effect.

Also, make sure you get your emergency kit ready, which includes supplies for your family and pets, putting important documents in a safe place and making sure you’re taking steps to protect your property.
