DENHAM SPRINGS, La (BRPROUD) – Many people in Livingston Parish are still without power and everyday essentials. But thanks to the National Guard and parish leaders, people can now get crucial supplies.
Food, water, ice, and tarps are being distributed to those who need them most.
“I’m still without power out there you know and like everybody else, we are all hurting you know, but every little bit helps,” said Denham Springs resident Mark Trujillo.
Thousands are stopping by these sites, also known as “PODs,” grabbing essentials items. For National Guard 2nd Lt. James Bulhof, this work hits close to home.
“I chose the National Guard about a year ago. I’m from Lake Charles, and Hurricane Laura just hit, so my family was living off of PODs just like this one for a couple of weeks, so it is personal to me that I get to be here doing the same for other people,” Bulhof said.
Many are still without power, and those with a generator say it’s just not enough.
“Every other day it costs $60 to fill my cans up,” Trujillo said. “It’s just hard, but we are getting through it.”
Stories like Trujillo’s makes these efforts truly appreciated.
“It’s awesome, it means a whole lot, we love the work that they are doing and we are just so grateful, like to get this bag of ice today is awesome because we are going to be able to drink some cold water,” said Livingston Parish resident Jamie Brewer.
“We appreciate all of them, everybody’s help who is out there,” Trujillo said.
Currently, there are five PODs locations:
