BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Four teens were injured Saturday night on the way to prom after a drunk driver hit their vehicle head-on. The crash happened just outside the Central city limits around 8:30 p.m.

According to information from the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office, the teens were driving north on Central Thruway in a silver 2005 Toyota 4Runner when they were reportedly hit head-on by a southbound silver 2012 Ford Explorer that crossed into their lane after crossing the median.

The Explorer was disabled and left facing east across both lanes, according to EBRSO public information officer Casey Rayborn Hicks. The teens’ SUV appeared to have flipped and was left on the driver’s side facing east across the southbound lanes

All four occupants of the 4Runner were taken to medical facilities, Hicks said. Three had minor injuries. One teen was trapped in the backseat and was airlifted to a hospital “for a possibly serious, but non-life-threatening injury.”

Erick Melendez, 33, was the driver of the Explorer. He was arrested by Louisiana State Police and booked into the East Baton Rouge Prison on charges of operating while intoxicated, reckless operation and driver must be licensed.
