BATON ROUGE, La, (BRPROUD) — A local funeral director’s life was honored Tuesday evening at a balloon release.

Winnfield Funeral Director Sherell Weston was involved in a fatal accident on Scenic Highway around 10 p.m. on April 30th.

Police arrested 22-year-old Darrien Rodgers after allegedly traveling at a high rate of speed fleeing law enforcement. Authorities said Rodgers disregarded traffic signals, and almost hit several vehicles until he hit Weston’s.

A balloon release was held at BREC Memorial Park to celebrate her life. Friends and family gathered all over to celebrate not just her 49 years of life, but to celebrate her 50th. Weston was just one week shy of her birthday.

Many people said she was a “Heart of Gold” and that “her legacy needs to be carried on.”

“Sherell was a good friend of mine and a neighbor, and I just came to be a pillow of support. To help in any way I possibly can,” said Sshanika Stwart, a friend of Weston’s.

While at the balloon release, there were also some strong feelings towards Rodgers’s release. Rodgers was released from the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison after posting a $62,000 bail.

“It’s sad, I don’t think he should be out right now ya know? Due to the incident and you know the tragic thing that happened, it’s just not right,” said Litearisa Graves, a childhood friend of Weston’s.

After counting to three, everyone released the balloons to long live her legacy.
