ASCENSION PARISH, La. (BRPROUD) – Ascension Parish leaders update residents on the latest recovery efforts in the wake of Hurricane Ida and the growing issue with fuel supply.
Sheriff Bobby Webre addresses the lack of fuel in the parish. He is unsure why fuel isn’t coming into the parish as residents have a growing need for it to run generators for their homes and businesses.
“We are having trouble with fuel, getting fuel for our parish,” said Webre. “I know down south is devastated but even here in Ascension Parish we just can’t get the answers and there are long lines at these fuel stations. I just had our distributor drop off their last load of fuel to the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office 911 center.”
He said there is enough fuel as long as the parish is able to receive fuel from elsewhere. Webre said if Louisiana refineries are not capable to run fuel to areas affected by the storm then outside help is necessary so that residents are able to continue recovery.
Parish President Clint Cointment updates residents on the latest storm recovery efforts. He commends the aggressive approach to debris cleanup and addresses the importance of fuel for residents.
“We have a lot of residents at home that are going to be running out of gas with their generators,” said Cointment. He said residents are in need of fuel to keep cool during a heat advisory and maintain medical equipment like oxygen.
Cointment said they’re working with state officials to get more fuel to critically hit areas so recovery can continue.
State Representative Tony Bacala said despite the issue with the lack of fuel, the state is improving as more businesses open.
“We need to recognize in every aspect of getting our life back to normal things are improving. More stores are opening to get supplies, communication, travel, everything is improving except we’re going downhill fast in terms of fuel,” said Rep. Bacala.
Despite fuel issues, parish and state leaders are hopeful in overall storm recovery after Hurricane Ida.
