A teenager was shot and killed Friday evening and investigators confirmed Monday that the young man was an innocent bystander in the shooting.

According to a Monday evening news release from The Gonzales Police Department, 17-year-old Mekhi Darville of Sorrento was the victim of the deadly shooting that unfolded in the parking lot of Fuel Smart on South Burnside Avenue on the evening of Friday, November 11.

Investigators say shots were fired due to an ongoing social media feud between two groups of juveniles. They add that Darville had nothing to do with the argument, stating “Mekhi Darville was not associated with or a participant in this feud.”

Apparently, Darville happened to be driving a vehicle with passengers, and some of his passengers were associated with a group involved in the disagreement.

While he was driving, the two feuding groups happened to encounter each other and when someone fired a weapon, Darville was hit.

Investigators with the Gonzales Police Department announced Monday that arrests are likely to be made shortly.

They added that members of the community have been helpful in providing information related to the tragic shooting.

Along those lines, anyone with additional information about the shooting should contact The Gonzales Police Department at (225) 647-9583 or Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-STOP.
