GONZALES, La. (BRPROUD) — When you hear Jonathan Henriques talk about all the cats he has rescued over the years, expect a story or two.
Here’s his most recent story: In early March, two homeowners (from Avoyelles and Webster parishes, respectively) contacted the Humane Society of Louisiana to hand over some 80 cats from their properties. The humane society contacted Henriques, who oversees Rescue Alliance in Ascension Parish — and the cats were saved.
Henriques brought the animals to his cat care facility: a large warehouse stocked with hundreds of dollars in food, water, litter and ventilation. He and his Rescue Alliance volunteers have been getting the cats spayed and neutered, taking them to veterinary appointments, giving them medicine and feeding them plenty. The group hopes the cats will be healthy for adoption in the coming weeks and months.
“There’s plenty of furbabies looking for homes in shelters and rescue groups,” Henriques said. “Instead of breeding, rescue an animal that’s already in need.”
Nursing cats back to health can be a costly process, and Rescue Alliance is requesting donations. The group has made an Amazon wish list of the supplies it needs. People can send supplies and other donations to 13342 Crawford Rd. in Gonzales.
People can also drop off supplies at these two locations:
- Petstar Animal Care, 38432 W. Airline Drive, Prairieville
- Petsmart, 40451 Lowes Ave., Gonzales
