Hammond man arrested after striking and killing child

HAMMOND, La. (LOCAL 33) (FOX 44) - A 25-year-old Hammond man was arrested early Tuesday morning on hit and run charges.

Davonta Johnson Abron is accused of taking the life of a 5-year-old in a hit-and-run crash.

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Department said the hit-and-run crash occurred "near the intersection of East Park St. and Simpson Place in Hammond." 

TPSD said, around 7:15 p.m. a black Nissan Sentra driven by Abron hit a 5-year-old and Abron left the child on the side of the road.

According to witnesses, a loud crash was heard and "they observed a black male exit a black Nissan Sentra, walk around the vehicle assessing it for damages, and then reenter the Nissan before fleeing the scene."

Sheriff deputies arrived at the scene to find the lifeless child and they along with Acadian Ambulance Services performed life saving maneuvers.

According to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Department, the 5-year-old child died later that night from injuries related to the hit and run crash.

An investigation led deputies to Davonta Abron and he was arrested around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday. 

Abron was charged with hit and run resulting in fatality, negligent homicide, three outstanding hold-without bond warrants and a parole violation. 

The investigation is still ongoing.
