Hammond Senior Center gives away more than 300 Thanksgiving meals

Local News

HAMMOND, La (WVLA/WGMB)– Local seniors were able to pick up Thanksgiving Day meals through a safe and socially distanced drive thru-event Thursday.

It was a safe drive-thru Thanksgiving Food Giveaway for seniors at Michael J. Kenny recreational center in Hammond. People’s Health Community relations manager Susan Guidroz says in partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank, it was important to shine a light on the issue of food insecurity especially among the elderly population.

“It’s very much needed in the senior population we know food insecurity is a challenge and especially now with so many seniors that are home and isolated,” says Guidroz. Corn, turkey and sweet potatoes were just some of the items on the menu. There are plenty of food giveaways going on throughout the metro for residents in need of a hot meal. People’s Health says they plan to host another giveaway in Slidell.
