BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — St. George Fire Department crews responded to a reported hazardous materials call Monday afternoon.
The fire department said firefighters were called to the 5800 block of Siegen Lane at 1 p.m. regarding an expanded 55-gallon metal drum inside a warehouse. Crews were told that the drum was paint thinner but the warehouse’s management was unsure if it was mixed with anything.
Authorities evacuated the building and the Baton Rouge Fire Department’s hazmat unit was called for assistance. According to a spokesperson from SGFD, a “game plan” was drawn up and crews started manually cooling the drum with a carbon dioxide extinguisher.
SGFD said the drum was vented and drained into another container.
No injuries were reported in the incident.
