BATON ROUGE, LA (BRPROUD) – In this week’s Healthy Living Carly Laing takes us out to Bayou Jiu Jujitsu for a closer look at what the skill has to offer.
If you’re looking to build some confidence and improve your fitness, Bayou Jiu Jujitsu may be just the place for you.
“It’s the gentle art, that’s what it translates to. It’s taking your opponent down, your attacker down, and being able to restrain them and hold them without causing yourself harm or even having to harm them,” said Bellard.
Bayou Jiu jujitsu and Self-Defense Owner Kevin Bellard said this activity offers multiple benefits.
“You’re going to gain confidence, you’re going to get in shape, you’re going to make friends, learn how to defend yourself. All that carries on to outside of here too,” said Bellard.
Bellard said you’ll gain more than just physical strength.
“Once you step on the mat you can’t think about anything else but Jiu jujitsu. It’s called mat therapy. You can break away from reality and let out all your focus here,” said Bellard.
Bellard said don’t let the title intimidate you, anyone can try it.
“A lot of smaller people do very well because they can move around very well, they’re flexible. Women really find it, like ‘wow I didn’t know I was capable of doing this.’ Well it’s because nobody ever showed you,” said Bellard.
The practice is welcome to people of all abilities and ages.
“Bring your kids, for yourself, you want to get your wife in it, your husband in it. For the majority of people they just want to learn how to defend themselves, how to take care of themselves, how to protect their family, and to be confident,” said Bellard.
