BATON ROUGE, LA (BRPROUD) – Jiu jujitsu is top-notch when it comes to getting your body physically in shape, but it can also help keep you safe. Carly Laing explains in this week’s Healthy Living.
Bayou Jiu jujitsu is helping people learn more than just a new activity.
“That’s really kind of taking some of the things that we learn from Jiu jujitsu and applying them to real-life situations. So, if you’re out and about and maybe somebody attacks you, or you’re in your own home and it’s a domestic violence situation, just really any situation where you feel in danger, especially when a bigger, larger opponent is coming at you, you need to know what to do,” said Candice McDaniel.
McDaniel is a coach at Bayou Jiu Jujitsu. She teaches classes for kids and the female self-defense class.
“They’ve done studies where even just getting in a defensive posture really makes you less likely of a target. Most people in those situations, they’re not looking for somebody who is going to fight back. So, when you feel like you can do something your odds of being in danger really go down dramatically,” said McDaniel.
McDaniel said it’s a safe way to protect you and your family.
“For my family, this is a requirement. Like you need to know what to do if somebody grabs you, if someone pulls on you, comes at you aggressively, I want them to know how to handle themselves. I think that is incredibly important because you never know what type of situation you’re going to be in, you or your kids,” said McDaniel.
In addition to peace of mind, McDaniel said it’s a great workout and it’s fun.
“You really can’t compare it really anything. There are so many other things like maybe it’s strength training, maybe it’s cardio, maybe it’s endurance but you Jiu jujitsu is all of them combined. You’re really not just trying to maneuver your own body around but you’re trying to maneuver somebody else’s body around. You’re wrestling, you’re up, you’re down, you’re all over the place so physically it’s top-notch,” said McDaniel.
It’s also great for your mental health.
“The mental benefits are huge. When you come into the gym, you’re not thinking about anything else you’re just focused on what is this person doing, what do I need to do. So the stress relief is amazing,” said McDaniel.
