BATON ROUGE, LA (BRPROUD) – Balance, focus and core control are all skills you can gain through slackline. It’s a new activity now available at GymFit. Carly Laing gives us a closer look in this weeks Heathy Living.
What started as a fun pastime for rock climbers is now a challenging, mainstream exercise.
Slackline is exactly what it looks like, balancing while walking across a slackline.
“Before they do anything I take them through a general kind of yoga warm up, get them used to breathing. We do everything on the ground first and then eventually we start moving to other balance drills. So, walking across yoga blocks, walking across bosu balls and just different types of balance.”
GymFit Founder and Owner Joshua Roberts said it is great for building mental strength.
“The biggest thing with slackline and anything with balancing is the focus. If your focus isn’t there you’re going to fall off. If you feel like you’re about to move and you’re not looking at that spot the entire time, you are going to fall. So, teaching people to trust themselves is the hardest part,” Roberts said.
Roberts said if you try it out, be ready for a challenge.
“It’s one of those things that’s very frustrating. If you don’t have patience it’s not something you’re going to get on day one or on day two,” Roberts said.
If you can push through the frustration, Roberts said its a great way to calm the mind.
“One of the biggest things is the meditative breathing. Sometimes you don’t even realize it. So, just having that fact, you can focus on one thing. Everything is blocked out. Obviously being out on a beautiful day, the sun shining on your skin, it’s great for the overall morale,” Roberts said.
If you’re feeling adventurous, Gymfit is the perfect place for you.
“A lot of the stuff that we do offer is very different. A lot of people are apprehensive, a little fearful which is normal. Fear is normal, so if you can step out of that box for a brief second you never know how large you can make it,” Roberts said.
