Healthy Living: Trying new skill with Adult Tumbling at GymFit

BATON ROUGE, LA (BRPROUD) – Learning a new skill as an adult can be scary, but in this week’s Healthy Living, Carly Laing shows us the benefits of adult tumbling and why it’s so important to keep your mind and body young.

Once you reach a certain age, trying something new can be intimidating.

“I think the biggest thing is if you can step out of your comfort zone on one thing, that opens it to so many others things.”

Things like adult tumbling.

“I treat them just as if they were a five year old or four year old tumbling for the first time. I get members who are as old as 50, people who have no background in tumbling.”

Gymfit founder and owner Joshua Roberts said adult tumbling is a fun, new way to learn some fundamental movements.

“We work on ballet basics. We work on movement agility, coordination drills and then eventually we start teaching forward rolls, backward rolls and then leading them to more advanced skills.”

Roberts said tumbling is a great way to grow your body and mind.

“Outside of those obvious things, the strength, the coordination, the agility. I think it’s more trust in themselves and their bodies and movement in day-to-day life.”

Roberts said no experience is needed.

“Obviously with age comes a little bit of mobility issues so sometimes we work on that. We work on flexibility but for the most part anybody and everybody can do it.”

The best part is, it’s fun.

“A lot of people do just come for the community aspect. The first 30 minutes of every class is pretty much a workout. We’re doing active stretching, active strength, we’re doing movements they probably haven’t done in decades or ever. So just that fact alone. Once we’re done with that there’s a social hour where they can walk around and talk to people. You’re getting high fives…
