BATON ROUGE, LA (BRPROUD) – Typically when you think of working out most people think of running or lifting weights, but it doesn’t have to be the usual.
In this week’s healthy living, Carly Laing takes a closer look a unique exercise called Acroyoga.
Finding a fitness routine that works for you can be stressful, but if you’re someone who wants something a little more adventurous, acroyoga may right up your alley.
“Acroyoga is a combination of yoga poses with acrobatics. So essentially, you have more of the yoga side of acroyoga, which focuses on breathing and partnered styled poses. As it’s evolved and gotten a lot bigger, it has kind of meshed together. You have standing acrobatics, but typically acroyoga is more about the stretching and the breathing and doing it with a partner.”
Gymfit founder and owner Joshua Roberts said it might look intimidating but don’t let that scare you away.
“That is what is exciting about acroyoga. On day one you can get multiple poses, especially if you have an experienced base like myself who can put you in the air. You can get those Instagram pictures.”
Roberts said it’s a great exercise for the mind, body, and soul.
“I do have a small form of Tourette’s. I’ve had it since I was younger, but it’s the meditative breathing part of it. When I’m actually on the ground and doing it, my Tourette’s actually go away. For me personally, that’s what I like about it. Now as far as strength, flexibility. It’s great for building leg strength, it’s great for building flexibility. Also the trust aspect of it. You know, we have couples come in or even team bonding experiences. We’ve had ladies come in in their 60s, and groups of businesses, and for the first time they’re lifting their partner in the air. So build up the trust to the strength and the meditative aspects of it as well.”
But if you do have an injury, always check with your doctor first.
“It can put some pressure on the lower spine. Especially if you have tight hamstrings or anything like that. But I think it’s great overall, especially if you’re healing for something to just come by and check it out.”
Roberts said anyone is welcome to try it out.
“That’s the most exciting part to me, getting someone off the street and seeing them a little hesitant and then you get them in the air and they kind of get excited. For a lot of them this is their first time ever doing something like this. So that’s what I like a lot about it.”
