BATON ROUGE, La (LOCAL 33) (FOX 44) - The holidays come with plenty of sweet treats. While that is some people's favorite part of the holidays, it it can tempt you away from healthy habits.
Dr. Robert Drennan with the Cardiovascular Institute of the South said you can treat yourself a little, but don't stray too far away from healthy habits.
When heading to holiday parties, there's a few things you can do to stay on track. First, you could eat before going to the party to avoid temptation. If you're afraid there won't be any healthy options, you could make something healthy to bring for the group. It can also be tempting to overeat at those functions. A good rule of thumb is to avoid going back for seconds, no matter how great it tastes.
Traveling can also throw a wrench in health routines, but you can try to find the healthiest option.
"When traveling, obviously we don't have the best selection. You kind of get what you get sometimes, but there's healthy options most places you end up. You'll get through it," Drennan said.
If you're worried about getting off track, find a friend of family member to hold you accountable. Knowing you are not alone will make it easier to stick to your healthy habits.
