BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – Juneteenth, held on June 19th, is a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the nation.

It became a federal holiday on June 19, 2021. Here are some events in Baton Rouge and the surrounding areas that will celebrate the new federal holiday.

East Baton Rouge Parish

Father’s Day Giveaway

The Resistance will be hosting a Father’s Day Giveaway on Friday, June 17 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at 11353 Greenwell Springs Road Suite A5.

Radio Bar Juneteenth Pop-Up Market

The Radio Bar will have a Juneteenth Pop-Up Market to support Black-owned businesses.

The pop-up market will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and feature Black entrepreneurs, artists, and more. The market will be at 3079 Government Street on June 19. Find more information here.

Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome’s Unity Fest

East Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome is inviting the public to mark their calendars for a local, upcoming Unity Fest in honor of the special day. The celebration will take place Saturday, June 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in downtown Baton Rouge. Find more information here.

Juneteenth Caravan

The Baton Rouge African American Museum (BRAAM), Community Against Drugs and Violence (CADAV), and State Representative C. Denise Marcelle will celebrate Juneteenth together on Saturday, June 18.

The Juneteenth Caravan parade line-up will begin at 10:30 a.m. One vehicle per household, group, or organization is allowed. Organizers ask that cars are decorated in Juneteenth fashion with a message.

Fathers On a Mission Annual Celebration of Fatherhood: STEM Fest

Fathers On a Mission will be hosting their 5th annual STEM Fest. Fathers and father figures have the opportunity to inspire the youth. Those in attendance will learn about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. This event will be held at BREC’s Forest Community Park, 13900 S Harrells Ferry Road.

Annual Ole’ Skool Variety Greek Show

The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) of Greater Baton Rouge presents the 18th annual Terral Jackson, Sr. Ole’ Skool Variety Greek Show on Friday, June 17 at the F.G. Clark Activity Center on the campus of Southern University.

Annual Juneteenth Celebration

The Annual Juneteenth Celebration is scheduled for Saturday, June 18 at the BREC Gus Young Park from noon to 4 p.m. The event will have free crawfish, fried catfish, and jambalaya on a first come first served basis. COVID-19 vaccinations, wellness testing, and free giveaways will also be available. State Rep. C. Denise Marcelle, the Louisiana Office of Tourism, CareSouth, and Gordon McKernan Injury Attorneys are some of the hosts. Gus Young Park is located at 4200 Gus Young Avenue in Baton Rouge.

City of New Roads Juneteenth Celebration

The City of New Roads will hold its Citywide Juneteenth Celebration at Emmitt J. Douglas Park on Monday, June 20. The free event will have food, speakers, and live music. Find more information here.
