BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – The holidays are a time of giving, but how do you know if you are giving to a legitimate organization? The Louisiana Secretary of State’s website has a way to verify charities registered with the office. This is what you need to do to make sure you aren’t getting scammed.

On the secretary of state’s website, go to Business Services and search Louisiana business filings. From there, Louisiana residents can look up if a business or charity is registered in Louisiana.

Multiple sheriff’s offices in the state have warned citizens of phone scams. In Ascension Parish, a scammer impersonated a deputy and used a phone number registered to the sheriff’s office to call people and trick them into sending cash payments for a warrant or ticket. The sheriff’s office announced on social media that they would never request a payment over the phone.

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has given tips to avoid falling victim to holiday scams.
